Each summer, the Black Hills Playhouse (BHP) buzzes with excitement as actors, technicians, and emerging professionals gather to help create a vibrant theatre community in the heart of the Black Hills. The audition and hiring process to assemble each season’s company is a fascinating behind-the-scenes endeavor that contributes to the stellar productions enjoyed by audiences each summer. Here’s a glimpse of what it takes to create the magic of a seasonal summer stock theatre!

Numbers Speak Volumes

In 2024, the Playhouse received overwhelming interest, including:

  • 900 live auditions

  • 450 online submissions

  • 150 applications for tech and customer support roles

These numbers reflect the dedication of those who contribute their talents to bring exceptional theatre to life. For the approximately 90 positions filled each season at the BHP, the selection process ensures that the best of the best are chosen to create unforgettable performances.

Several Opportunities To Meet Us On the Road in 2025

The BHP team has already hit the road for the 2025 season, traveling across the country to find the right talent! Live auditions and interviews are taking place at various locations, such as Des Moines IA, Macomb, IL, and even Memphis TN. This allows a diverse group of performers to showcase their skills in person. This nationwide effort reflects the Playhouse’s commitment to quality and diversity. For those unable to attend live auditions, online submissions ensure the process remains accessible.

The Dream Team Leading the Charge

The individuals coordinating auditions and hiring play a critical role in shaping the season:

  • Artistic Director, Dan Workman, and Operations Guru, Liam Blue-Scates, are spearheading the live audition tour.

  • Former BHP employee, skilled woodworking artist and carpenter, Jason Reuter will oversee technical hiring, ensuring the creative vision is realized by a skilled team of technicians.

Building the World on Stage

Original scenic, lighting, and costume designs are a hallmark of BHP productions. These visions are brought to life by an expert team of designers, electricians, stitchers, props builders, carpenters, and painters. Their craftsmanship ensures that every set piece, prop, and costume enhances the storytelling and immerses the audience in the world of the play.

Nurturing Emerging Talent

A cornerstone of the Playhouse’s mission is fostering new talent. Each year, 28 interns–emerging professionals in college, recent graduates, or grad students–gain hands-on experience working alongside seasoned professionals. This balance of mentorship and collaboration creates a unique learning environment and lasting industry connections.

Women in the Spotlight

The 2025 season is drawing unprecedented interest from women across the industry. This is thanks to season 79’s lineup, featuring two musicals focusing on women-centered stories! This surge of interest underscores the transformative power of representation on stage, adding to the excitement of the upcoming season.

A Stage for Everyone

Behind every breathtaking performance is a team of passionate individuals dedicated to their craft. From the actors on stage to the technicians behind the scenes, the Black Hills Playhouse is a celebration of creativity, collaboration, and community. As an audience member, you’re witnessing the culmination of months of hard work and the dreams of artists from across the nation.

The next time you take your seat at the Playhouse, you’ll know just how much effort goes into making each production extraordinary. The curtain is rising, and we’re thrilled to share another season of unforgettable theatre with you!
